Sandia Loca Water

Invitation food blogger Lauren McElwain gets to experience unique flavors from across the globe without even leaving her hometown as the coordinator of Tupelo’s Cooking as a First Language international cooking classes. At a recent Mexican cooking class, taught by her friend, Irma Cubillo, she was inspired by two recipes: Sandia Loca and Cucumber Water. She combined the two to create this refreshing drink.

Recipe by Lauren McElwain

  • Half of a ripe watermelon

  • 6 cups water

  • ½ cup sugar

  • Juice of 6 limes, 1 lemon and 1 orange

Blend the meat of the watermelon along with about a cup of water, until smooth.

Strain blended watermelon through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher to separate out most of the clumps.

Add water, sugar and citrus juice to the pitcher, and stir well.

Cover and chill for about 4 hours. Serve over ice in glasses rimmed with colored sugar, if desired.
